What Is Complying Development?

Did you know that complying development is a way to fast track approval for development? Applications can be approved in as little as 20 days and complying development applies to homes as well as businesses and industry. For example, the above Colorbond shed workshop (8 x 9 x 2.8m) was approved as complying development. Let’s find out more about what complying development is and if your building might be eligible.

Complying Development Requirements

According to NSW Planning & Environment

“Complying development is a combined planning and construction approval for straightforward development that can be determined through a fast track assessment by a council or an accredited certifier.”

There are many structures it can be applied to including:

  • New houses
  • Additions and alterations to an existing house
  • New industrial buildings
  • Demolition of a building
  • Changes to a business use

In 2015-2016, complying development allowed 33% of all development approvals in NSW  to be fast-tracked, saving families and business owners time and money (up to $15,000 for a new house and $2,600 for renovations).

Complying development does need to be signed off by a building certifier and is subject to certain conditions.
